SoulCare
Something deep within us is wired for relationships. We are relational beings and we need one another. Yet the strangest thing is that we often live in isolation and rarely let people know us beyond surface level depth. We keep up appearances because it frightens us to be honest. Yet community is a gift from God and the gospel of Jesus contains the resources to set us free to take the risk of truly knowing others and truly being known. The gospel insists that we are flawed, broken, and sinful people. So we can finally stop pretending like we've got it all figured out and that we're perfectly put together. When we do, the gospel tells us that God does not condemn us for admitting failure, but accepts us, and showers us with mercy and grace. He resists the proud, but actually gives grace to the humble. At the same time, thankfully God does not abandon us in our sinful state. He moves us to holiness and empowers us for right living through Jesus and by His Spirit. The gospel motivates us to live for the One who died for us. Soulcare is a place where we try to take these glorious truths and apply them to our real lives.
In the book of Acts, you discover that the early church would gather in a large setting for corporate worship, and then meet in homes in smaller communities throughout the week. We love that picture and are trying to let it shape our church. Soulcare groups are smaller communities of 8-12 people who meet regularly outside of Sunday worship.
Honesty
We're really asking God to let words like authentic, transparent, genuine and real describe who we are becoming. We're fighting the temptation to put on religious facades with each other and instead trying to let the gospel free us to be honest with each other. Though we can get by with surface level relationships, we're trying to plumb the depths and connect at a soul level. Much easier said than done, so God help us.
Discipleship
SoulCare is one of the vehicles for discipleship at Seven Mile Road. Our hope is to learn to walk closely with Christ in community. This happens through reading Scripture and allowing the Spirit to speak to us. It happens through conversation about our lives, confession of sins, and celebration of victories. It happens as we speak truth to one another and pray for one another. Each member of a SoulCare community is called to be committed to their brothers and sisters and to seek God's help in ministering to them and caring for their souls.
